PARENTS GUIDE - DISCIPLINING SMALL CHILDREN

Here’s what you should know about disciplining small children – children deserve all the love and affection in the world, but that doesn’t mean you should let them do anything they want, thereby not learn the difference between right and wrong.

The more lax you are, the more difficult your child’s behavior is likely to become. When there is no concept of wrongdoing and no repercussions or consequences for the child’s actions, a child is highly likely to misbehave, throw tantrums and not listen to their parents. They do things that irritate others or sometimes even do dangerous things that could harm them or those around them.

You have to know when to say and a firm “No” no at times to the child regardless of their tantrums. You cannot give in everytime after he or she starts wailing for a moment or two. As a parent, discipline is just as important as loving your child and caring for them. In fact, some philosophers even say that, discipline is the highest form of love that a parent can have for their child, and is essential for the healthy mental, emotional and overall development of the child.

Now, how to discipline a toddler or a small child? First understand the cause of the indiscipline. Why is your child behaving in the manner that he or she does? It’s possible that you have been lax with their behavior and ignored minor infractions and now that has snowballed into a major problem that affects other people as well.

In this situation, you should be persuasive, without adopting a punitive posture. The child is still very small and does not understand why he or she is wrong and why mom and dad are angry with him or her.

You can try to talk to the young child in a way they understand. Talk to them about their favorite character such as Bob The Train or Baby Bao Panda, and how Bob The Train would not be happy with such behavior from one of his biggest fans.

You may offer an incentive or a bonus of an extra 15 minutes with Bob if they behave like a good boy or a good girl for the whole day, without throwing tantrums while showing good manners.

The rule of thumb and one advice that parental psychologists suggest is that to never give in to the child’s demands at the point of tantrums – know when to say “No” and it should be a firm “NO”. The child should know that mom or dad are serious and they don’t think that his or her behavior is cute or appreciated leading them to get what they want. Giving in the child’s demands at that point is reinforcing bad behavior.

Parenting is one of the biggest challenges that life can throw at you, but it is also the greatest gift anyone can get. Remember – you have to set clear boundaries for the child, so that he or she knows what is acceptable and what’s not.
