Above all, what exactly do we understand under discipline? If you ask randomly selected mothers, most will undoubtedly tell you that to teach their child to discipline means to make them behave appropriately. In the minds of many people, discipline is almost synonymous with punishment as a means of forcing the child to behave as well.
I would like to offer a wider synonym: training. When you discipline your child, you actually teach it - it is the disciple, the teacher. This process should start as soon as possible. A good approach are kids educational videos.
We, parents, have to ask ourselves the question: "What are we pursuing when we educate something to our children?" If they think seriously, most of us will answer that our goal is to form an elderly person who can master, his own choice, to control his behavior, to use his freedom as a responsible individual.
We too often try to teach something to children in moments when they are unable to perceive. Recall, for example, how we mold them while weeping when they make a whim or during a family quarrel.
Your little son has thrown a cube on his sister, and you have slashed him. He screamed, he broke, and the mother chose that moment to read morality. "Is it okay for you if your sister hit you with this cube? Why do you treat these people like that?"
Let us adopt the following principle: not to teach a tired or irritated child. It would be pure insanity to do it - it is not at all capable of perceiving it right now. A good alternative could be nursery rhymes lyrics – simple explained and up to the point but when the child is in condition and will remember the main points we want to stress up on.
Think about everything the parents are trying to get into their children, and which is as impossible for them as writing a dolphin machine. For example, do not write at the age of nine months. Staying at the restaurant for two years. Be courteous and educated at four years. Yes they are two years old at five. The list is endless.
Many parents expect their children to learn things beyond their reach and are completely ignorant about the nature of the child, depending on age and stage of development. We all tend to ask younger than what they are capable of. That is why we usually grow our second or third child more successfully. Then we know what is reasonable to expect from him.
Is it possible to educate without punishment? The answer is yes. We can teach our children many things without resorting to punishment. Why? Because its only real effect is that it temporarily prevents a reaction. Sanctioned behavior is not neutralized forever. When the effect weakens - which is inevitably going on - the behavior is reproduced.
There are other reasons to punish the child as rarely as possible. With every punishment we learn it to is afraid of us, and the result is often that the child begins to despise the parent. We should not teach a child of hatred and fear, unless it is absolutely necessary, for example, to protect him from himself and from a certain danger.
